Victor Brauner is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. He is a figurative painter with symbolic features who was very close to the surrealists, especially Dali and Magritte.
The kinship with Surrealism is evident in its ability to explore the unconscious, especially through the point of view of the dream, but in a simplicity of representation, a quasi-infantile kind of drawing conceived with the desire to represent the original stages of the human race.
What distinguishes Victor Brauner from the Surrealists are the characteristic features of his art, namely the flatness of the drawing, the schematic naivety, the frontality: a return to the two-dimensional, flattened figures and to the primitive art in which Paul Klee set the standard in the 20th century.
