He was a co-founder of the “Tachism” movement of the mid-1940s, a French version of Abstract Expressionism. Tachism (from French “taches” = stains) favored the spontaneous act of painting over conscious shaping. His art found numerous admirers among other artists, such as AndrĆ© Masson.Tal-Coat wrote books and professional articles on painting. His drawings and lithographs were characterized by a minimalist formal language.
