Russian Torah hands are ornate and traditional pieces of jewelry that have a rich history and cultural significance in Russia. These dainty thimbles or thimbles are often made of high quality silver and are decorated with filigree patterns, engravings and often gemstones.
Traditionally, Russian Torah pointers were worn by women to protect their delicate fingers when reading religious texts, especially the Bible, or assisting in religious ceremonies such as weddings or baptisms. These hands were considered symbols of faith and piety.
There is usually a small hand with an extended index finger at the front end. The pointing sticks are to avoid touching the handwritten scrolls with the hands, as the Torah scroll is considered sacred. The Torah pointer is part of the Torah ornament and is kept together with the Torah in the Torah shrine.
The ornate design of the Torah hands often reflects the rich Russian folk art, and they were often made by craftsmen with great care. Silver, because of its purity and luster, was preferred to emphasize the sacred significance of these items.
Today, Russian Torah hands are often prized as collectibles or gifts for special occasions. They are a symbol of Russia’s deep spiritual connection with its history and culture.
