Excerpt from Grimm’s Fairy Tales: The Machandel Boom
The wife of a rich man, while peeling an apple under the juniper tree (Low German: Machandelboom), cutting her finger, wishes for a child as red as the blood and as white as the snow. She becomes pregnant, dies giving birth to the son and is buried under the tree. After mourning, the man marries a woman who has a daughter with him but hates the stepson. When once the daughter wants an apple, she gets it first. But when she asks for her brother to get one too, the mother takes the apple away from the daughter and tells her to wait for her brother….
