Lino Sabattini created an extensive oeuvre that was characterized by great diversity and a pronounced awareness of form. Christofle, the renowned French manufacturer of silverware, made Sabattini its artistic director, a position he held until 1963; he also designed ceramicware for Rosenthal and eventually opened his own store, Argenteria Sabattini, in Brengnano. Sabattini never allowed himself to be tied down to a fixed style; the great joy in experimentation that had distinguished him as a boy eager to learn was retained by him even as an established designer. His best-known work is considered to be the Como tea set, which he created in 1956. Later designs sometimes deviated significantly from the subdued elegance of this early success, but still developed a unique fascination time and again. Lino Sabattini won prizes and awards for his work, including a gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1971 and the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. His work can be seen at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, among others.
